Blue/grey/ash squirrel: whats different?

Postby docdenzen » Sun May 21, 2017 4:26 pm

Hi there!
I've difficulty in understanding how the hair of squirrel is classified by brush manufacturers.
The same Japanese hieroglyphs indicate different bristles, for example,
Gray squirrel, blue squirrel, ash squirrel: 灰リス

However, there is practically no blue squirrel: 青リス

Please, help me to understanding!

I'm pretty sure blue and grey squirrel are synonymous, but I'm not sure about ash. Blue and grey squirrel are super soft, but I do believe a lot depends on the batch and quality. I've found red squirrel to be the softest and Kazan squirrel super silky.

Blue vs grey/ash: The manufacture told me it depends where it comes from, the artisans will name it. When I asked, they have always told me it was similar, they just call it differently based on provenance. A make-up artist that I know (Evgeny) said recently it was different et worked differently...
Sometimes you can notice a hue in the bristles that is more blue but it's not always noticeable. If you take a tiny brush, I find grey squirrel is softer but needs to be packed in a more dense way for it to be controllable, while the tiny blue squirrel brushes that I own are more controllable but don't feel as soft as grey. But, it's not a rule, it depends on too many factors.

I always thought they are all the same! Thanks Sonia for the info.
